We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting your Personal Information. Through this policy we would like to let you know how we collect, use, share and protect your Personal Information.
In this policy, “Matador”, “we”, “our”, “us” or “the Company” refers to Matador Digital (Pty) Ltd and any other company or subsidiary that forms part of Matador and where reference is made to “you” and “your” it means each natural person or juristic entity who uses our Loyalty and rewards application or associated services. Loyalty and rewards application refers either to Matador’s Supreme Finance application or a white labelled version of Supreme Finance application being used by third parties.
Only Personal Information that is necessary for the purposes described in this policy will be collected and we will only process Personal Information in compliance with the applicable laws, including the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and in ways that are for, or compatible with, the business purposes for which the Personal Information were collected or that are subsequently authorized by you.
What is Personal Information?
In general Personal Information comprise of any information that relates to a natural person or a juristic entity and can be used to directly or indirectly identify that natural personal or juristic entity including, but not limited to:
- Race, gender, ethnicity, sex, pregnancy, marital status, disability, religion, etc.;
- Names, contact addresses, contact details and ID number;
- Company name and registration number;
- Locations, IP addresses and cookie data;
- Health, genetic and biometric data;
- Education and employment history;
- Criminal record and behaviour;
- Personal opinions and views;
- Private and/or confidential correspondence.
What is Special Personal Information?
Personal Information that includes for example any information concerning religion, race, ethnicity, health or sex life, trade union membership, biometric information and criminal behaviour is regarded as Special Personal Information.
What is data processing?
Any manual or automatic actions performed on personal information including the collecting, recording, collating, disseminating, organizing, updating, structuring, storing, using and erasing of data.
How do we collect your personal information?
We may collect information from you in the following ways:
- Directly from you;
- From your device or a device that is associated to you;
- Through in-app technology;
- From a subsidiary of our company;
- From a company we have partnered with to provide a specific service offering to you; or
- From an external third-party source.
We may also collect technical information when you visit or use the Loyalty and rewards application and its associated services. This may include information such as Internet Protocol (IP) address, the type of mobile device you use, your device operating system and browser type, a unique device identifier and other information about your session while using the Loyalty and rewards application or associated services.
We will only collect and use personal information if we are lawfully permitted to do so.
The lawful bases we rely on for processing this information are:
- We have your consent to do so;
- We have an obligation to carry out a necessary action for the cancellation of a service or product procured through the Loyalty and rewards application or related to any associated services;
- We are required by law to process your personal information;
- The processing protects your legitimate interests;
- We have a legitimate interest to pursue; and/or a third party has a legitimate interest to pursue.
Information we receive directly from you:
You actively share information with us in various ways when using the Loyalty and rewards application and associated services. For example, you share information with us when you:
- Register for the Loyalty and rewards application and its associated services;
- Transact through the Loyalty and rewards application;
- Request customer service or contact us;
- Participate in a benefit program partnered with us to provide you your benefits and/or loyalty with such benefit program; and
- Participate in a contest, promotion or customer survey.
All personal information that is supplied to the Company must be accurate, up-to-date, not misleading and complete in all respects. You are required and commit to immediately notify the Company of any changes to your Personal Information.
Information received from External Third-Party Sources:
We may receive information about you from other sources and external third parties we have partnered with or who has partnered with us to provide you with the Loyalty and rewards application and associated services and added benefits. We need to collect or receive this information from other parties to provide you with the products and services you have signed up for through the Loyalty and rewards application or to provide the necessary information to another party you have contracted through or independent from Matador to provide specific services or products to you.
Why do we collect and process your Personal Information?
In order for us to offer you the Loyalty and rewards application and associated services, we need to collect, use, share and store personal and financial information about you:
- To register, create and maintain your Loyalty and rewards application account;
- To use your unique device identifier to link your Loyalty and rewards application to your device for security purposes;
- To audit and monitor your transactions and engagement through the Loyalty and rewards application and associated services;
- To provide customer service;
- To fulfil transactions for products and services;
- To update our technical and operational functionality and to conduct business analysis, including analytics and projections, to identify areas for operational improvement;
- To protect the integrity and security of our business and Loyalty and rewards application;
- To help prevent fraud;
- For research and development to extend or update our existing products and service offering and to develop suitable products and services to meet your needs;
- To provide you with marketing material and third-party advertising subject to your right to opt out of any such communication at any time; or
- To comply with legal functions and obligations.
All Personal Information which you provide to the Company will be used and/or retained only for the purposes for which it is collected, where after it will be permanently destroyed. We will only retain personal information for longer than the purpose for which it was collected if it is required by law or where you have given consent for us to retain such information for an extended period.
Sharing of Personal Information
All of the categories of personal information that we collect may be shared with other companies, including those within our group of companies, for the specific business purpose. We will not sell or rent your personal information for money. We may share your personal information in limited circumstances, such as to conduct our business, for other companies to offer you and administer your use of co-branded products or joint projects, in the event all or a part of our business is merged, sold or reorganized, when legally required, as described below, or with your consent.
Where we need to transfer your personal information outside the borders of South Africa, we will ensure that we only transfer the personal information to countries that have similar privacy laws to those applicable in South Africa or to a party who is contractually bound to comply with data protections obligations which impose no lesser legal requirements than those imposed by POPIA.
Before transferring personal information to a third-party contractor, such as an authorised service provider, the Company will obtain assurances from the third party that it will process personal information in a manner consistent with this policy. Where we learn that a third-party contractor is using or disclosing personal information in a manner contrary to this policy, we will take reasonable steps to prevent such use or disclosure.
Loyalty and rewards application
By using the Loyalty and rewards application or by providing your information to us through the use of the Loyalty and rewards application, you expressly consent to our collection and use of the information you disclose to us in accordance with this policy, including but not limited to your consent for us to share your information as set out in this privacy policy. If you disclose any personal information relating to other people to us, you warrant that you have the authority to do so and to permit us to use the information in accordance with this policy.
By using our Loyalty and rewards application or by providing your information to us, you agree to the practices described in this policy and you agree to Matador, its directors, officers, employees, servants, agents and/or contractors and/or other third parties to process (which will include collecting, using and disclosing) your personal information for the purposes stated in this policy.
If you do not agree to this policy, please do not use our Loyalty and rewards application or provide your information to us. Any use by you of our Loyalty and rewards application and/ or any provision by you of your information will be deemed to constitute your acceptance of the terms in this policy.
How do we protect your information?
We are committed to ensuring that your information is secure. We have implemented technical, administrative, and physical security measures to protect your personal information from unauthorised access or disclosure and improper use.
Access to your personal information is restricted to only to those employees or third parties who need the personal information to perform a specific job or task.
It is important for you to protect yourself against unauthorised access to your Loyalty and rewards application. Be sure to log out of or to close your Loyalty and rewards application after you have completed your visit to the Loyalty and rewards application.
Whilst we will do all things reasonably necessary to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee nor do we accept any liability of whatsoever nature for any unauthorised or unlawful disclosure and/or use of your personal information, either by employees and/or made by any third parties (including third party service providers) who are not subject to our control, unless such disclosure and/or use is as a result of our gross negligence.
How long will we keep you information?
We will keep your information only for as long as we need it for lawful business purposes or as required by law (including tax legislation) and any other statutory obligations. We may keep your personal information for longer than required if you have agreed to this or we lawfully allowed to do so.
If we need to keep your personal information for longer than required, and more specifically for historical, statistical or research purposes, we will do so with the appropriate safeguards in place to prevent the records from being used for any other purpose.
Your information may be kept for varying periods from the end of our relationship, depending on regulatory requirements. We will take all reasonable steps to destroy or de-identify the personal information that we hold when it is no longer required.
Your data protection rights
You have the right to ask us to confirm whether we hold any information about you. You may also request a record from us about the personal information we hold about you, as well as information about all third parties with whom we have shared your personal information. Once we have given the information to you, you may ask that we:
- Correct or delete the personal information in our possession or under our control if it is inaccurate, irrelevant, excessive, out of date, incomplete, misleading or has been obtained unlawfully;
- Destroy, delete a record of your personal information that we are no longer authorized to keep in terms of regulatory requirements; or
- Stop or start sending you marketing messages by informing us in writing.

It is your right to refuse to provide personal information, but this refusal may limit our ability to provide the required services to you. We will only collect information from you that is necessary and relevant to the products or services we have to provide.
We will take reasonable steps to ensure that all personal information is kept as accurate, complete and up-to-date as reasonably possible but may not always expressly request you to verify and update your personal information, unless this process is specifically necessary.
In addition, you may cancel or modify the email communications you have chosen to receive from us by revoking your consent under you profile within the Loyalty and rewards application or if you have any questions or complaints concerning your personal information or how to exercise these rights, please contact us at operations@matadordigital.co.za.
Or, if you are not satisfied with the way we have dealt with your complaints you also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator. You can email the Information Regulator with your complaint/query at POPIAComplaints.IR@justice.gov.za.
Changes to our Privacy Policy
We will review this Privacy Policy from time to time and reserve the right to amend this Privacy Policy at any time to make provision for changes in our business, products and service offerings and legal requirements where applicable. All amendments to this policy will be posted in the Loyalty and rewards application.
